Astrid Azoulay

Architect & Designer

Astrid Azoulay explores architecture with a unique sensitivity
for exceptional craftsmanship. Each of her projects is an immersion into poetry
of materials, where attention to detail and the pursuit of balance transform spaces
into bespoke living spaces, refined and timeless.

I’ve always had a special affinity for craftsmanship. Artisans are the ones who know their materials best and offer the most fitting solutions, both technically and aesthetically.

How would you define yourself as an architect?

What defines me the most is my commitment to guiding my clients from A to Z, from the first sketch to the final delivery. I enjoy designing comprehensive projects where everything is thought through in continuity. My goal is for each space to be elegant and well-considered, but above all, inhabited and in harmony with its occupants. A living space, full of emotion.

What are the key stages of your journey?

My journey is primarily rooted in hands-on experience. After attending a business school and completing an MBA in purchasing, I had the opportunity to intern with an interior architect.

This immersion marked a turning point, pushing me to train alongside various trades. My mother, who restores furniture, has always made me sensitive to materials and craftsmanship, but it was this first professional experience that gave me the momentum to pursue this path. I then learned alongside artisans, which allowed me to establish my own firm in 2012. Even today, each project remains a source of learning, especially thanks to the artisans I collaborate with.

What is your scope of work
and how would you define your style?

What sets me apart from other interior architects is my holistic approach: I personally oversee the entire project, from managing the structural work to selecting decorative objects. This continuity provides my clients with great fluidity and a precious sense of peace. The success of a project, for me, relies on meticulous oversight, particularly during the construction phase – a stage I truly enjoy and have never wanted to delegate. Whether it’s structural work or bespoke furniture, I surround myself with artisans and craftsmen with whom I’ve built, over time, a relationship of trust.

My style is timeless and deeply personalized. I don’t follow trends. I strive to design spaces and atmospheres that stand the test of time and resonate with my clients. I love working with natural materials—wood, stone, marble—exploring their many finishes. Each project follows a guiding thread, whether it’s a play on textures or harmonious color palettes.

Can you tell us about your relationship with craftsmen?

I’ve always had a special affinity for craftsmanship. Artisans are the ones who know their materials best and provide the most accurate solutions, both technically and aesthetically. My role is to highlight them in my projects and involve them
where their expertise can elevate an interior.

Over time, I’ve built relationships of trust and respect with them. Today, we work hand in hand,
which allows me to be bolder in my proposals. It’s this relationship that makes the difference:
everyone has their place, and it is felt in the final project.

I enjoy reinterpreting materials and craftsmanship to offer unexpected finishes and results, while maintaining a timeless and bespoke approach. I encourage my clients to explore these artisanal trades and allow themselves to be surprised by materials and finishes they might not have considered.

How do you generally work with your clients?

Most of my clients come through recommendations and reach out to me by phone or email. We then arrange an initial meeting to discuss the project. This step is essential—it allows us to ensure we share the same vision and that there’s a good connection between us.

I then take full responsibility for overseeing the construction site, coordinating all trades involved. I’m used to working with trusted artisans and companies who are familiar with my standards and the nature of my projects. My role is to ensure a smooth process, anticipate any constraints, and guarantee complete coherence in the execution.

Why did you choose to join Collection Latil?

I met Anne-Sophie Latil during a lunch at Armel Soyer’s, who was presenting her gallery. Invited by Jacqueline Lestingi from Blanc Carrare, I quickly connected with Anne-Sophie over our shared passion for craftsmanship. Her energy, vision, and the way she approaches collaborations with artisans immediately resonated with me, as they aligned perfectly with my own philosophy: highlighting exceptional know-how, sometimes by reinterpreting it to explore new techniques. Joining this adventure felt completely natural.

I love this creative synergy, this collaborative work with artisans—some of whom I’ve already worked with! Together, we can pool our expertise and give free rein to our imagination.

Joining Collection Latil also gave me the opportunity to rethink my image and refine my communication. I finally took the time to organize a photo shoot—something I had been putting off for a while. For me, becoming part of Collection Latil means strengthening the visibility and credibility of my studio by joining a collective dedicated to exceptional craftsmanship.

Which artisans from Collection Latil would you like to collaborate with,
and what would you like to explore through their craftsmanship?

I’d love to collaborate with Florence Girette for her poetic touch… I can already imagine a stunning ceiling.
Also with the Manufacture Robert Four, perhaps on a piece of furniture.
And with Maud Ruby or Studio MTX on a lighting fixture… the possibilities are endless!
