Dedicated to craftsmanship and the expression of materials and colour, Sonja de Monchy creates custom glazed ceramic surfaces in her workshop, intended to enhance interior spaces.

Sonja de Monchy assembles her ceramic pieces to craft table trays, consoles, aprons or bar trays, wall panels, credenzas, and conceives decorative objects to infuse spaces with a strong personality. She pays the utmost attention to the quality and origin of materials.

She employs clay, natural pigments, playing with textures, metallic enamels, and the contrast between the raw and the precious. Sonja approaches surfaces like a painter approaches a blank canvas.

First, there is the drawing, an exchange with the surrounding nature of the workshop. Gradually, the line asserts itself and becomes a part of Sonja’s creations to play with light. Her inspirations are diverse, artistic, artisanal, architectural and also contemplative in the face of the beauty of nature and the botanical.

The Art of Raku

The avenues of exploration in ceramics are countless, which appeals to Sonja, who enjoys experimenting and researching materials.

The Raku firing technique, ” happiness in chance” in Japanese, is an invitation to let go in the ceramic creation process. The pieces are extracted from the kiln at full temperature and the thermal shock causes the glaze to crack. These cracks are then accentuated by smoking in sawdust, forming a play of random lines. The unpredictability of these cracks and the material contrasts position her work between a unique piece and a work of art.

Sonja creates custom designs in collaboration with designers and interior architects who call upon her expertise. Her formal, material and enamel research generates numerous ideas, resulting in beautiful creations . Sonja works hand in hand with decoration professionals in France and abroad.
