DESIGN AND MANUFACTURE OF UPHOLSTERY
AND DECORATION FABRICS

Established in France in 2010, TOYINE creates unique textiles tailored to the needs of design professionals using traditional hand and semi-mechanical looms.

While working with Peter Marino as an interior designer, Toyine Sellers collaborated with artisans from around the globe developing custom materials, discovering a new passion which led her to transition into the world of textures.

What does Toyine Sellers offer?

In 2010, having decided to focus on weaving and textiles, Toyine took over an old atelier on the verge of closure in France and enlisted its team of skilled artisans. Establishing her own atelier, and founding the brand TOYINE, she embarked on a journey to create unique textiles for interiors, including handwoven rugs, cushions, and throws. Her work is characterized by its textural quality, unexpected colour combinations, material variety, and radiance. Beyond textile excellence, TOYINE also strives to keep European craftsmanship and its weaving heritage alive.

A French workshop, local materials,
designs inspired by elsewhere

Toyine Sellers founded her atelier in France, near Lyon, an area rich in weaving history. She conceives her creations as works of art meant to enchant and evoke memories, emotions, and dreams, just as they did for her when she created them. Her travels, experiences, and the natural world, along with art and food, serve as her inspiration. Like a very curious explorer, she is always observing the world around her, translating her observations into woven pieces that adorn some of the most beautiful interiors and furnishings in the world. While her inspiration comes from around the globe, the production is exclusively French. The textiles are woven to order using the finest locally sourced and dyed silk, linen, wool, cotton, fantasy yarns, and leather.

If the design
draws inspiration
from around the world, the production,
on the other hand,
is exclusively French.

Large-scale productions, small batches:
a team and tools for specific projects

TOYINE textiles are woven to order on traditional looms dating from 1960-1980. Working on these older looms, as well as their special pre-assembly requirements, means that production still involves a high component of manual labor. TOYINE is unique today, as its focus is on quality rather than quantity, with each textile woven to order. Some of the techniques used are rooted in weaving history, while others are part of the TOYINE DNA. The artisans working at the atelier are trained to carry on this know-how. In this process, Toyine Sellers doesn’t want to recreate the past; rather, she strives for the jamais vu (never before seen), creating new processes to achieve new visions.

How are projects conducted?

TOYINE presents its extensive collections through samples, featuring over 400 references in the current collections, along with archived and custom creations. For specific projects, bespoke textiles can be developed in collaboration with the client and aligned with Toyine Sellers’ creative vision. Often, clients select a texture or colour palette they like from the samples. They then request changes or adjustments to meet their requirements. For the best results and a pleasurable experience, the final product must appeal to Toyine’s colour and design sensibilities. After the initial selection of colours and yarns, the atelier weaves 2-3 sample variations on a theme, and the client chooses the one that works best for them. Lead times range from 7 to 9 weeks, with a minimum order requirement of 5 meters. Toyine places particular importance on first-hand meetings and interactions with her clients. For this reason, TOYINE doesn’t have a showroom; instead, its dedicated sales team, in regular contact with Toyine, meets with the clients to understand their projects and requirements and where necessary, involves Toyine firsthand, in particular on custom weaves.

An example of collaboration : Toyine et Chahan Minassian

One of Toyine’s most challenging projects was a custom weaving project conceived and executed for  Chahan Minassian, who desired a series of screens, paravents, for the Bar des Ambassadeurs at the Hôtel de Crillon in Paris. For this project, the interior architect selected three samples from the collection, each with different colours and textures. He wanted the fabric to transition gradually from brown to gold, and then to gray. The team worked on multiple prototypes before successfully weaving Chahan Minassian’s vision. Working on old looms, with different materials, textures, and colours, posed a real challenge. It required patience because the weaver was required to change yarns 19 times per panel, to achieve the right rhythm for a perfect gradient. For Toyine, this project was one of perseverance, iterations, and a deep love for art and craftsmanship.

Toyine Sellers embodies the essence of textile craftsmanship, blending traditional know-how, inspired creativity, experimentation, and exacting standards. Her pieces all originate from her atelier in the Vercors, in France, a place of creation, preservation, and the transmission of precious craftsmanship.
