Manufacture Robert Four | Exhibition Clouds Theory | Until September 29, 2024 | Normandy |

Laurent Grasso calls uponthe expertise of the Robert Four Manufacture
to create a monumental Aubusson tapestry.

At the Normandy Impressionist Festival, celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, artist and filmmaker Laurent Grasso transforms the Abbey of Jumièges with a profoundly immersive and enigmatic installation. Through a journey featuring films, neon lights, sculptures, and paintings, the artist creates atmospheres that challenge the boundaries of our perception and understanding. The recurring motif of the cloud in his work becomes the guiding thread of a fascinating temporal journey, activating the abbey’s ruins to resurrect fragments of the past to life and envision potential futures.

One piece of this exhibition is a large Aubusson tapestry, created in collaboration with the Robert Four Manufacture. Part of the ‘Studies into the Past’ series, this work explores the theme of time travel within a setting inspired by historical paintings. The central motif of the tapestry, a cloud, is drawn from Grasso’s film ‘Projection.’ This over two-square-meter piece is meticulously handwoven on the reverse side using the traditional flat-weave technique. Each dye is custom-made by the master dyer of the Manufacture, ensuring a bespoke creation.
